Should You Try Allergy Bedding?

If you have severe allergies, you may have already tried many different things to help your sensitivities, from installing filters in your furnace and better windows in your home.  You may even take medication to control your reactions.  Now may be the time add allergy bedding to your arsenal against your allergies.  What is allergy bedding and how does it work?

For normal bedding and linens, it’s easy for dust, dead skin cells, pet dander, and other irritants, to get lodged in the fibers of these items.  Most linens have very loosely woven fibers where these elements can lodge and stay.  With allergy bedding the fibers are typically woven much tighter so that there are less “pockets” for these things to settle into.  This type of bedding also works to encase your entire bed so that you have less dust and dust mites that can settle into your actual mattress and box springs.  When you have irritants that settle into your mattress it really doesn’t matter what your linens are as you’ll always have allergens that lodge close to your skin.

So if you have an interest in allergy bedding, what items should you invest in or should you just purchase every product out there for maximum protection?  In reality most allergy sufferers do well to purchase at least pillow covers and sheets.  Why is this?  It’s been said that a pillow increases some 10% in weight in one year due to dust mites, dead skin cells, and other elements that get inside.  Buying a good pillow cover as part of your bedding is always recommended!  And after ten years the average mattress actually doubles in weight because of dead skin cells and other irritants as well.  Many people make it a practice to vacuum their mattress with the vacuum cleaner hose every month or so in order to cut down on this occurrence.  By purchasing allergy bedding that includes sheets or a cover for your mattress you’re going to protect your skin and your lungs from breathing in these elements during your sleep.

Remember too that dust mites and things such as these that are found in your bedding are not just a cause of allergies but can also cause asthma and skin rashes as well.  These elements can get into your lungs and settle on your skin, so that you can have many different types of allergic reactions.  By investing in anti-allergy type of bedding you can protect your lungs, your skin, your respiratory system, and everything else from sensitivity and irritants.

Keep in mind too that allergy bedding is usually just as affordable as any other type of linen so consider it as a worthwhile investment in your overall health.

If you do develop allergies from your bedding consider taking Quercitin.  Quercitin is a very powerful antioxidant and can reduce inflammation boost the immune system and strengthen blood vessels and improve circulation.  Quercitin is also known for its ability to block the release of histamines, thus reducing or preventing allergy symptoms.  Take 500 mg twice daily.

A number of studies have suggested that taking antioxidants such a Vitamin A reduces the risk of bronchial-constriction.  Vitamin A is stored in the liver and fat cells of the human body and can reach toxic levels.  DO NOT take more than the recommended dosage of Vitamin A.

Treating Your Dog Allergy

Did you know that living with an indoor dog can actually help a child to be safer from allergies?  There is a chemical that dogs release called endotoxin that actually helps the immune system to develop which is beneficial for children.  Usually those that have a dog allergy have developed this sensitivity by being in contact with a dog after their immune system has already developed.  While dogs may be man’s best friend, a dog allergy can be very difficult for anyone to live with if they love their pet.  What can a person do in order to treat this sensitivity, other than send their pet away?

For one thing remember that the chemical that causes a dog allergy usually comes from their saliva and not their skin.  This is unlike a cat allergy, which is usually triggered by cat hair and dander.  A dog’s saliva contains albumin, which causes an allergic reaction in many.  So obviously the first thing you need to do when you have a dog allergy is keep the dog from licking your hands and face!  When the dog licks themselves this sticky protein is deposited on the hair along with dead skin cells.  When the dog hair comes into contact with dust, clothing, curtains, furniture, or you, the protein will stick to the surface of the object.  After playing or wrestling with your dog, this saliva can trigger an allergic reaction that lasts for hours.

It also helps to make sure the dog is outside as much as possible.  When the dog is indoors he will spread the allergen all around the house that much more, causing the reaction of your dog allergy.  It can also help to remove the carpeting in your house in as many rooms as possible; opt for hardwood floors in various rooms.  The less carpet you have, the less allergens will stay in the home.  For the carpeted rooms, vacuum often with a HEPA equipped vacuum cleaner.  Air cleaners can make a really big difference in the severity and frequency of allergy attacks.

Even though your dog allergy is probably not caused by his skin or hair, be sure to bathe the dog at least once or twice per week.  This removes allergens that are clinging to his skin and fur.  Keeping your home scrupulously clean is also imperative when you have a dog allergy.  Steam clean your carpets once or twice per year.  Most vacuums will blow the smaller particles of dust back into the air through the exhaust so you will need to get a vacuum that has some type of HEPA filter that traps microscopic particles of dust from being blown back into the air.

Dust all your furniture and surfaces several times per week with a damp cloth (a dry cloth only spreads dust around rather than actually getting rid of it), and don’t forget to regularly clean window blinds and curtains as well.

If none of these things help and you don’t want to get rid of your dog, talk to your doctor.  He or she can recommend options to treat your dog allergy with medications and other options.  You may also get regular shots which help your immune system to build up a tolerance for the dog as well.

Of course for a severe dog allergy you may just need to part with your pet.  Being able to breathe is of course much more important than any family pet.

Some Natural Options for a Pollen Allergy

Most people refer to a pollen allergy as hay fever.  Pollen is a very fine dust or powder that contains the male cells of a plant’s seed.  A person can develop an allergy because these small cells hitch rides on air currents; this is part of how flowers grow.  Without this process we wouldn’t have those beautiful blooms, but of course that’s very cold comfort for someone with a pollen allergy who can’t even breathe during certain months of the year.

If you have hay fever or a allergy to pollens, what can you do about it?  First recognize that any allergy is a defect in your body’s immune system.  The body is reacting to pollen as it would bad germs or other irritants and goes into overdrive trying to fight it off.  When you realize that your body is simply overreacting to something that really shouldn’t bother it, you can better address the cause and the symptoms.  As of yet there is no real cure for a pollen allergy or any allergy for that matter, but you can control your body’s sensitivity and reaction.

It might seem unfair, but those with a severe pollen allergy may need to keep their home more insulated than others.  While your neighbors have a great screened-in porch, you may need to use glass panes instead of screens.  Investing in double or triple glazed windows is not only energy efficient, it can also help with the sensitivity to a pollen allergy.  A HEPA filter or other filtering device on your furnace is also necessary to screen out as many irritants as you can.  Of course completely avoiding the outdoors or locking yourself up in your house is not possible or desirable for anyone.

Some simple and natural tricks you can employ to keep yourself from having more of a reaction than normal would be to keep your home adequately humidified as well.  Living in a tropical environment may be beneficial to you because environment with a high humidity does not carry different type of air-borne contaminates well such as pollen.

When the air is dry your lungs, which are natural filters, don’t work as well as they should.  This also helps to keep your skin healthy and keeps other irritants at bay, which is good for anyone with a pollen allergy.  It also helps to avoid other things that irritate a person’s system overall, such as tobacco smoke, pet dander, overly dusty or dirty environments, and harsh detergents and chemicals in shampoos and soaps.  Switch to natural, organic products and make sure your environment is adequately ventilated.

Using Eucalyptus or olbas oil in boiling water and inhale the steam that is being generated may also be of benefit to you.  This treatment is also very good for any type of stuffy nose due to a cold, flu or allergy problems.  Both oils readily diffuse into the air and can provide benefits to nasal and bronchial areas.

It’s always best to stay in touch with your doctor as well; there is no cure for a pollen allergy and they are rarely life-threatening, but having chronic itching and watery eyes and nasal congestion is not safe either.  And of course if you have a severe allergic reaction of any type you need to contact emergency services at once.
