The Most Evolved Baby Safety Monitors
A mother cannot afford to cook in the kitchen and be with her baby in the nursery at the same time. Nor can a father or mother entertain the guests or manage their home job and be with the baby simultaneously. All of them rely on a baby safety monitor to track their baby’s sounds and activities to make sure that the baby is safe.
Earlier models of these monitors were simple machines that contained a transmitting and receiving mechanism. But manufacturers of baby monitors are nowadays incorporating the full spectrum benefits of advancing technology into the making of these gadgets. The result is that the latest ones that use digital technology are several steps ahead in their functionality than the analog monitors that have been prevalent before it.
The Pros of Digital Baby Safety Monitors
Digital monitors, first of all, provide far better sound and video quality than analog monitors. The precise transmission of sounds using digital technology enables the listener to make out even the slight variation in the child’s breathing patterns. And they can view the child’s movements and facial expressions also better because of the sharper video quality of digital monitors.
The range availability and interference features are also better in digital monitors than in analog monitors. If a baby is to be viewed only from a couple of rooms away, any type of monitor would suffice. But those who have a larger house and want to view the baby from the yard, or deck, or garage, should ideally rely on digital baby safety monitor since it provides a much higher range. With analog monitors, the sounds that your baby makes can be picked up by neighbors also who rely on the same frequency for their baby monitors, and you may also get to listen to the sounds their baby makes. This can sometimes be inconvenient, or confusing. Digital monitors have better no-interference technology and security features that help to maintain the users’ privacy.
And the Cons
While the benefits of digital baby monitors are fully acknowledged, it has its negative sides as well. The health risks involved in the technology has not been fully ruled out. The electromagnetic waves that are part of the digital technology is said to expose the child to radiation. While these are bad even for adults, the tender body and organs of babies are believed to be more susceptible to the radiation from electromagnetic waves. A partial solution out of this is keeping the monitor as far away from the child as possible.
Another downside of digital monitors is its high cost. The question whether this is a downside or not will depend on the long term cost effectiveness of the product and the financial capacity of the buyer.
Conclusion
Digital baby safety monitors invariably have more to offer than analog baby monitors. However, a user’s requirements have also to be considered in evaluating a product. For smaller range requirements, analog monitors will also give a satisfactory service.

Some Common Baby Safety Products
Your child’s safety is of course, of primary concern to you. You would do anything to keep your baby secure, but you can’t always keep an eye on him. And there are hidden dangers in your house that you hardly think of twice, but can be extremely risky for small, inquisitive children. So even before your child has left his crib, you need to start ‘baby-proofing’ your home. While every home is unique and so there are no rigid requirements, here is a list of the most common baby safety products in the market today:-
-
Electrical Outlet Covers – These are simple plugs that fit over your electrical sockets and protect your children from accidental electrocution. There are pull tabs so you can access them, but children cannot reach in.
-
Window Blind Cord Wind Ups – The wires that control window blinds present an attractive, hanging plaything for your children. And yet, these are extremely dangerous, especially if your child manages to get tied up in them, as these tough cords can easily strangle children. The wind – ups let you wind up the cord inside a plastic case to prevent such accidents.
-
Cabinet and Drawer Locks – These locks are easy enough to open by adults, but children will find them difficult to work. These baby safety products are ideal for cabinets and drawers where you store dangerous chemicals and medicines that you don’t want your child to find.
-
Toilet Locks – Children don’t easily give up when they drop a favorite toy down the toilet. And toilets are just tall enough for them to try and reach in; something that can be incredibly dangerous. Toilet locks prevent your children from opening the toilet seat by themselves.
-
Corner Cushions – Table edges can be especially dangerous for children, and can cause cuts and bruises. These baby safety products slip over such edges; some even cover the entire edge of circular tables so that your child does not accidentally hurt himself.
-
Safety Gates – Safety gates can be used in various locations of your home that you don’t want your child to access, like fireplaces, or areas with rough flooring. These gates are simple and easy to open for adults, and don’t curtail the movements of children, but keep them out of harm’s reach.
-
Finger Guards – Your child’s small sensitive fingers can get caught between hinges, causing painful bruises and worse. These finger guards block such openings and protect your child.

Baby Safety Gates: Your Special One Deserves It
As your child gets mobile, it becomes important to look for a safe place where the toddler can explore that new-found mobility. In a 2007 study conducted by Karin Mack, Ph.D., it was established that over 20,000 infants visited the emergency department annually for staircase related injuries. The simplest way to prevent these injuries is to ensure that stairways are blocked at the top and bottom by the right kind of baby safety gates.
Types of Baby Safety Gates
There are essentially two types of baby safety gates:
Pressure-Mounted:The advantage with these gates is that they can be fixed in a few minutes, without using any special tools. For safe installation, place the gate at the opening, expand the adjustable feet and tighten it against the wood. These are typically used in between rooms, hallways and at the bottom of the staircase.
Hardware-Mounted:This type is mounted (with the help of screws) into a wall or a wood post. These gates are ideal for installation at the top of a staircase, since they have integral swing-stop mechanisms that would stop the gate from swinging out. These can be used in combination with mounting kits and care must be taken that the gate has no fixed horizontal bar to cause a tripping hazard.
Pressure-mounted gates are the more popular option of the two as they can be simply wedged to a door frame and are comparatively less expensive. They are perfectly suited for traveling. However, experts warn against using this kind of gate at the top of a staircase, since there are chances of children tripping over the bottom rail and falling down.
Considerations before Purchasing Baby Safety Gates
Ensure that the baby safety gates are sturdy enough to protect your child. If there are chances of your toddler reaching over the gate to grab something, purchase taller gates. You will also have to find out if the wall on which you will mount the gate is hollow or a drywall. If it is the latter case, you might need to purchase extra hardware because screws that come in the package are meant for wooden walls.
One should also be wary of purchasing used safety gates. The accordion-style expansion gates with crisscross diamond shapes must be avoided since they have a tendency of ensnaring clothing and pacifier strings.
Safe-Tots.com stocks a wide range of gates including DreamBaby® Retractable Gate (Wall-Mounted), North States Industries® Auto-Close Gate, Pressure-Mounted and Cardinal Gates® Wood Gate and Wall-Mounted, among others.
