<description>Surpise, you are also exposing your child to elevated levels&#160;of formaldehyde in your home. I strong urge any parent to invest $39 to follow the Sierra Club&#039;s lead and use a passive ACS badge to determine your homes level of contamination.
Research released by California Air Resources Board on Dec. 15, 2010&#160;shows that 98% of the homes tested exceed the states recommended concentration of formaldehyde. The typical home was 4 times the states recommended concentration.
Then on May 25, 2010 a group of East Coast researchers published a report linking the increase of asthma and cancer in children to the energy codes that date back to the late 1970&#039;s.
Initially these codes required homes to be insulated. The most common form is formaldehyde fiberglass insulation. Formaldehyde is know to cause both asthma and cancer.
Then energy codes required double pane windows. This reduce the amount of air leaking. With less leakage the formaldehyde concentrations increased.
Then came house wrap such as Tyvek. Formaldehyde is unable to pass through this material but can continue going through drywall like water. This then force the formaldhyde that had been escaping to the exterior of the home to now enter the home.
Then came the requirement to pressure test the exterior shell of the home. This forced the builders to seal the building even more tightly. Again increasing the formaldehyde inside the home.
The have been other changes along the way as the energy code changes about every 3 years. Over the past 3 decades ventilation rates have gone from a complete air exchange every hour to one every 10-hours.
Formaldehyde in home in the 1970&#039;s was hard to detect. The reading vary depending on the study but have incrased and as of last year were 50-75 in the typical home and 100 to 150 in &#039;green&#039; homes that are required to exceed the energy code by 15%.
The first data point on the most recent energy code built using CARB compliant materials was 198 ppb. That is nearly three time higher than the typical FEMA trailer. This was measured in the master bedroom with the windows opened a crack, the front door wide opened, cooled to 68 degrees and the 24 x 365 force air fresh air ventilation system operating.
The question is how many asthma and cancer cases have been caused by our desire to save a little energy. You have to wonder if they took the energy used for the extra doctor visits into consideration.
I think they should give the parent the knowledge and let them decide what is more important, saving energy or their child&#039;s health. With full information a balance between the two could be achieved. But for the past 3 decades the entire emphasis has been on energy conservation.
Notice that the &#039;green&#039; folks make claims that their homes are healthier but not have scientists on their staff. They also don&#039;t have data backing up their claims. Yet other researchers have data showing the formaldehyde concentrations in &#039;green&#039; homes is significantly higher but cannot get the attention of the general media despite releasing multiple independent reports that all come to the same results.</description>
