Should You Try Allergy Bedding?

If you have severe allergies, you may have already tried many different things to help your sensitivities, from installing filters in your furnace and better windows in your home.  You may even take medication to control your reactions.  Now may be the time add allergy bedding to your arsenal against your allergies.  What is allergy bedding and how does it work?

For normal bedding and linens, it’s easy for dust, dead skin cells, pet dander, and other irritants, to get lodged in the fibers of these items.  Most linens have very loosely woven fibers where these elements can lodge and stay.  With allergy bedding the fibers are typically woven much tighter so that there are less “pockets” for these things to settle into.  This type of bedding also works to encase your entire bed so that you have less dust and dust mites that can settle into your actual mattress and box springs.  When you have irritants that settle into your mattress it really doesn’t matter what your linens are as you’ll always have allergens that lodge close to your skin.

So if you have an interest in allergy bedding, what items should you invest in or should you just purchase every product out there for maximum protection?  In reality most allergy sufferers do well to purchase at least pillow covers and sheets.  Why is this?  It’s been said that a pillow increases some 10% in weight in one year due to dust mites, dead skin cells, and other elements that get inside.  Buying a good pillow cover as part of your bedding is always recommended!  And after ten years the average mattress actually doubles in weight because of dead skin cells and other irritants as well.  Many people make it a practice to vacuum their mattress with the vacuum cleaner hose every month or so in order to cut down on this occurrence.  By purchasing allergy bedding that includes sheets or a cover for your mattress you’re going to protect your skin and your lungs from breathing in these elements during your sleep.

Remember too that dust mites and things such as these that are found in your bedding are not just a cause of allergies but can also cause asthma and skin rashes as well.  These elements can get into your lungs and settle on your skin, so that you can have many different types of allergic reactions.  By investing in anti-allergy type of bedding you can protect your lungs, your skin, your respiratory system, and everything else from sensitivity and irritants.

Keep in mind too that allergy bedding is usually just as affordable as any other type of linen so consider it as a worthwhile investment in your overall health.

If you do develop allergies from your bedding consider taking Quercitin.  Quercitin is a very powerful antioxidant and can reduce inflammation boost the immune system and strengthen blood vessels and improve circulation.  Quercitin is also known for its ability to block the release of histamines, thus reducing or preventing allergy symptoms.  Take 500 mg twice daily.

A number of studies have suggested that taking antioxidants such a Vitamin A reduces the risk of bronchial-constriction.  Vitamin A is stored in the liver and fat cells of the human body and can reach toxic levels.  DO NOT take more than the recommended dosage of Vitamin A.

Baby Strollers – Everything You Should Know

April 14, 2010 by admin
Filed under Baby Clothing & Gear

A baby stroller is one of the biggest expenses in having a baby. There is a baffling array of them on the market and there are tricks you will pick up that will make using a baby stroller easier. Together, they are the essential knowledge about baby strollers that every parent needs to know.

Comfort

First, in choosing a stroller, you must get one which both your baby and you will be comfortable with. Nothing is more important than your baby’s safety and comfort. That said, to get the right stroller that will suit your needs and last for a while, you also need to consider how easy it is to use and transport and whether it is flexible (for instance transforming into a car seat or carry cot).

If you don’t know what you are looking for, and have not considered the factors above, you can spend ages looking for a stroller and never finding what you need. One of the first things you need to think about is whether the stroller is safe and stable. Is it sturdy, even when the baby is moving around in the stroller and it is loaded down with the ever-important diaper bag and perhaps even some shopping?

Harnesses

You need to take a look at the harness system. Children soon grow inquisitive and get to squirming around. A five-point harness system is best for keeping them safe and secure. It also worked well to support the more floppy bodies of infants too.

Handles

Next, have a look at the stroller handles. Does it adjust so people of different heights can push it? You don’t want your six foot tall husband to have any excuse to get out of his pushing duties do you?

Necessary Extras

Good strollers will come with a sun canopy and a rain hood. You may have to use the stroller in all weathers so be prepared for that. However, be aware that these accessories can be bought later to add to the stroller so don’t necessarily let the lack of one of these features deter you from buying a good value stroller.

One thing you cannot compromise on is whether the stroller folds. It has to! A stroller which won’t fit into your car is of no use to you. Preferably, find a stroller that folds with one hand so you can hold your baby at the same time.

Stroller travel systems are great. These incorporate a standard stroller with an infant seat that removes from the frame. That means you won’t have to wake up your sleeping baby to get them into the car. Just think of all the tears you’ll save. It serves as a standard stroller for older babies.

If you have twins or babies with a small age gap between them you may want a double stroller, but an easier solution may be to clip two single strollers together. That way, you can also use the strollers separately when you want to.

It’s really important to try out a stroller before you buy it. Walk normally with it. Walk quickly with it. Make sure it doesn’t trip you up. Check that it fits in your car.

Think long-term, too. Children aren’t known for being clean. Your stroller will soon get dirty. You should look for one with removable seat covers which are easy to wash.

How much do strollers cost? They can regularly run you about $200-$300. That sounds like a lot, but if you are a busy parent with lots of little ones, that stroller may be a lifesaver!

Baby Care Products – What You Should Look For In Baby Safety Products

December 22, 2009 by admin

Knowing what baby care products you should be looking for can be a troublesome and stressful experience for any new parent. Baby safety is very important, and the anticipation of the responsibility that being a new parent necessarily involves is usually coupled with being inundated with brochures, leaflets and books listing countless dozens of essential products that you will need to purchase and install.

A very important consideration for your new baby is the question of temperature. It is easy for small children to get very cold, particularly in their hands and feet, so make sure that you have plenty of baby clothes, rompers or sleepers, and items to cover the little extremities such as mittens and booties. It is important to make sure that your new baby’s head is always covered, as a good deal of heat can be lost through the head, and for this reason a bonnet or hat is important. This is particularly true if your child is born during the winter months.

There has been much written about how to ensure that your baby is safe whilst sleeping in their cot or Moses basket. Make sure they sleep on their side or on their back and that you do not use pillows, duvets or loose toys, as these can easily cover the face of your baby, resulting in possible breathing difficulties. Keep in mind that cribs and cots must meet federal and ASTM standards, so if you purchase yours from one of the top manufacturers you can be sure that these are met.

It is also important to make sure that your baby is sleeping in a room which is of an appropriate temperature. There are a range of baby thermometers available which clearly indicate the optimum temperature for your baby’s nursery. If the room is quite warm then it is important not to use polyester sheets, and to remove any plastic wrapping that may be around the mattress. Make sure that you have plenty of baby blankets, and warm slick suits or rompers, in case the temperature drops too low.

There are a tremendous number of baby safety devices available to help protect your baby from the various dangers that an average family home presents. From baby gates to door stoppers, from electrical output plugs to fireguards – the sheer number and variety can be overwhelming. But in thinking about baby care products it is easy to forget that many of these items might be better described as toddler care products. It will be several months before your baby stands any chance of being able to get anywhere near any of these household dangers.

For this reason it is usually advisable for new parents to focus on those products that are actually going to be needed in the first few days and weeks of your new baby arriving. Baths and bottles are of particular importance. As a mother, whether you have decided to breast-feed or bottle feed it is sound advice to have bottles and baby milk formula ready just in case.

You will also need to make sure that you have a way of sterilizing the bottles, and it may well be advisable to practice sterilizing and making up the bottles of milk. Make sure that your bottles are glass: Canada has banned the use of plastic bottles due the possible content of Bisphenol A (BPA) in polycarbonate bottles, and many environmental organizations are suggesting that other countries should do the same due to its possible adverse effect on the endocrine system, responsible for the regulation of hormones in the body.

When it comes to transport, car seats are of critical importance and you will have to purchase this before you get baby home. If there is one baby care product that must purchase new it is this. This is not the time to take a chance on second hand goods, the history of which you do not know, and any child car seat could have been previously damaged without your knowledge. Also make sure to check the expiration date – yes, they have one – and that the seat is facing to the rear until your child is over one year old and at least 20 ponds, when he or she can be switched to a forward facing seat.

It is impossible to know for certain which baby care products your own baby will take to best. As long as you have purchased a good quality crib or cot, with appropriate sheets and blankets, a huge number of nappies and changes of clothes for the first few days and are confident in using the baby milk bottles and sterilizers, then the chances are that you will thoroughly enjoy the first few days of having your new baby, although in your sleep deprived state it is unlikely that you will
remember this!

It is often difficult for new parents to understand what baby care products they should purchase for their new addition to the family. The problem is not the range available, but knowledge of all the hazards presented to babies, and how to protect them from the risks these hazards present. Baby safety is specific to new babies that cannot help themselves should they be in trouble.

Go online and check out the latest information on recent recalls of dangerous baby products that has been provided by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
